Have you always wanted to draw your own cute animal characters but didn’t know where to start?
In this blog post, I will guide you through drawing a cute bunny character named Sophia. We will draw Sophia in 3 poses together.
Then I will help you create your own cute bunny character!
All you need is a regular pencil, eraser and paper to start. Let’s go! :0)
Drawing Tutorial 1: Sophia the Bunny waving Hello!
Step 1: Draw an oval for her head
Step 2: Beneath the oval, draw a rectangle shape that curves like a bell. This will become her body. Next, lightly draw a horizontal line across her head. Draw a vertical line down her head. These lines represent where her eyes and nose will be, respectively. Draw a vertical line down the center of her body.
Step 3: Now that you have the general shape of her body laid out, you can draw in her ears, arms and legs. Her ears come out of her head at a diagonal angle. Within the rectangle shape we sketched out for her body, draw an oval like shape for her body. The oval should not reach all the way to the bottom of the rectangle shape because the legs need to fit in there too. Since Sophia is waving, one arm is up, while the other one is down. Also, for Sophia’s face, sketch in tiny lines to indicate her nose and smile.
Step 4: Now is the fun part! You have her body generally figured out. Now you can draw in her face and the shape of her body using the underneath lines as a guide. Since you have the underneath lines as a guide, you can draw on top confidently.
Step 5: It’s time for a cute outfit! Draw in what you think Sophia should be wearing. I gave her a cardigan and a skirt because she is at work.
You’re done! 🙂 How did it go?
Drawing Tutorial 2: Sophia the Bunny doing yoga!
Step 1: Draw an oval for her head.
Step 2: Please note that Sophia is turned at a 45 degree angle. She is not looking straight at us. We must indicate this in our drawing. Draw a wedge underneath her head. This wedge is skewed because her body is turned. Draw a vertical line down Sophia’s oval head. The vertical line represents where her nose is going to be. Since her head is turned at an angle, the line is NOT in the center of her head. It’s on the right. Draw horizontal lines across her head to represent where the eyes, nose and mouth will be. Draw a vertical line down the wedge to represent the center of her body. Since Sophia is turned at an angle, notice that the center line is more at the right.
Step 3: Draw in Sophia’s ears, her body, arms and legs. Please note that her body and legs fit within the wedge that you drew in step two.
Step 4: The fun part! Draw in Sophia’s eyes, nose, mouth and cheeks. You can now trace out her body using the lines you drew in step 3 as a guide.
Step 5: Now give Sophia a cute yoga outfit and she’s ready for warrior 2 pose!
How did it go? Did you have fun drawing this?
Drawing Tutorial 3: Sophia the Bunny meditating
Here’s another opportunity to practice making a cute bunny drawing. Sophia is meditating in this drawing.
Step 1: Draw an oval for her head.
Step 2: For her body, draw a bloated square shape with rounded corners. Sophia is in a sitting position, so her body shape is more compressed into a square shape and not a long rectangle shape. For her head, draw a vertical line down the center to represent her nose. Draw a horizontal line to represent where her eyes will be. For her body, draw a vertical line down the center. I also drew a horizontal line across her body to remind me that the arms go above and her legs go below.
Step 3: Draw in Sophia’s bunny ears, her arms and legs. Sophia’s arms and legs are in folded positions, making it more complicated to draw. Hence, I’m taking the extra step of sketching in two wedge like shapes for where her hands are and two tube shapes for her legs. This will remind me that the hands come together and the legs cross over.
Step 4: Sophia’s arms are bent, and her hands are clasped together in the center of her body. Since her arms are bent, I drew two wedges for each arm to show the bending of her arms. She is in a sitting position where her legs are crossed over. I drew 2 wedges to show each leg in a crossed position.
Step 5: Draw in Sophia’s eyes, nose and smile. I drew little “U” shapes to show Sophia’s eyes are closed instead of dots. You can now trace out her body using the lines you drew in Step 4 as a guide.
Step 6: Give Sophia a cute yoga outfit and a mat to sit on!
How did it go? Was it a fun experience? Do you feel more comfortable drawing Sophia?
Hooray! You’ve done three drawings of Sophia the bunny. Do you feel comfortable enough to draw her in different poses? If you want more practice, feel free to draw different facial expressions for her. You can also draw her in additional poses.
Practice different facial expressions and poses for your animal character
Now it is time to draw your own cute character!
Whew! Hopefully all of those exercises has loosened up your hand and now you feel comfortable drawing. Are you ready to draw your own character? Remember to go step by step, just like how you drew Sophia.
- We started with general shapes to show how big her head is in relation to her body
- We drew in guidelines on her face to see where the eyes and nose go
- We then drew more specific shapes on top of the guidelines
- We finished off with drawing the face and giving Sophia an outfit
Below are examples of other bunny drawings using different shapes. Notice how different shapes give the bunnies different characteristics.
Examples of other bunny character designs
When you are designing your own character, think about:
- What is your character’s name? Is your character a boy or a girl?
- Is your character tall, short, big or tiny?
- What makes your character happy, sad or angry?
- What is your character’s favorite subject in school?
- What fun activities does your character like?
- What is your character’s favorite food?
- Does your character have any siblings?
The more you can think of, the more fun it will be for you to draw!
Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed this experience drawing and designing your own Kawaii character. In the next tutorials, I will show you how to draw a background and make a finished drawing.
Feel free to leave questions and post your drawings in the comments. 🙂
